The red-backed shrike breeds in most of Europe and western Asia and winters in tropical Africa. They breed in open woodland with dense thorny cover providing hunting posts and thorny branches for impaling the food items. This bird has hooked, hawk-like bill, and like a hawk, it sometimes carries preys in its feet. The red-backed shrike feeds primarily on insects, especially beetles, but also on other invertebrates, small mammals, birds, and reptiles.
